What I've Learned From Blogging

I've only been blogging a couple months, but I feel like there is so much I have learned already! And even so, that's not even the tip of the iceberg.  There is so much more out there that I don't even have a clue about. I thought I'd share today the things that I've learned in my short couple months as a blogger.

What a flat lay is and basically how to master it

The first time I heard the term flat, I was like what the what? What is that? So naturally I did what any blogger would do and I spent hours some time on Pinterest finding out what the heck a flat lay was and how to master it.

Always have your nails done

You never know when you're going to need to snap a picture of that delicious coffee, that yummy donut, your cute new mug, or whatever else it is that has to be displayed for Instagram.  You wouldn't want to be caught dead without a manicure for that, would you?!

You can make actual friends blogging

I didn't think anyone would actually even read this little blog of mine, let alone actually make friends from it. Little did I know that there are some amazing ladies in blogland and I love talking to them and reading all their posts!

Having a friend with you at all times is nice

Who's going to take a picture of you in that cute outfit or in front of that totally cool wall you stumbled upon or hold that book just right so you can take the perfect picture of it? Having a friend that is patient is like having a personal blogging assistant with you almost all the time and they are pretty much obligated to help you,

Blogging takes a lot of work

Before I started my own blog, I'll be honest, I thought blogging was all sipping lattes at cute little coffee shops while you quickly write a perfectly worded post that everyone loves.  Little did I know there was editing, writing, promoting, and more.  And that's just to write the post! That doesn't include the million other things that writing a blog entails, but I won't name them here because you all know way too well what that is.

Your real life friends might not get it

When I told one of my friends that I had started a blog, her response was, "So do you just reblog things that other people post?" First of all, ouch, and second of all, this isn't Tumblr.  They'll come around, and they'll become your biggest fans! This was after Mattie and I had to explain what a blog is for about 20 minutes. (Love you Allie!)

In all seriousness, I'm so glad I made the decision to start this little blog.  Even when I'm frustrated with that setup I took a million pictures or the post that I can't get just right I think of all the wonderful people I've met already and am reminded of how great this community is.

Meet my Solidarity Sister: Cat from Kitty Kitty La La

Hello all you beautiful people! Today I'm here to introduce my Solidarity Sister, Cat.  What is a Solidarity Sister, you ask? It's an amazing program Susannah from Simple Moments Stick created to help bloggers connect.  This is my first month doing it and I loved it. You can read more about it here
I am so excited that I got paired with Cat, she is so awesome! We have so much in common and I really connected with her.

Without further ado, here is a little from her so you can get to know her:

Who is your biggest role model?
My biggest role model has always been (and always will be) my mom. She was always extremely generous and supportive. I always felt bad asking her to help me edit my papers that I usually put off writing until the night before they were due, but she always stayed up as late as I needed to help. She had a great sense of humor and always had a smile on her face. She worked so hard to provide us (my brothers and I) with thoughtful gifts. I always admired how independent and outgoing she was. She could talk to anybody (and she did whenever we went anywhere) and be so genuinely nice and interested. Plus she was always there for me to show support and listen to me vent whenever I needed someone.

Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging as a creative outlet. I had tried blogging in the past several times but was always unsuccessful, partly because I never felt like I had anything worth sharing and being read. I really like writing, and of course reading other blogs. I also love fashion and doing fun stuff with my hair, although I haven’t done any of those posts yet. But I thought a blog would be a great place to share my memories and look back and remember all the stuff I’ve done.

What are three things you can’t live without?
I absolutely can’t live without my pets, or any pets. I love animals and can’t imagine what my life would be like without my babies (I’d probably have to vacuum a lot less). I also couldn’t live without my camera, whether it’s my cell phone camera or an actual camera, because I love taking a lot of pictures. Especially of my fur babies! I also probably couldn’t live without my laptop, it just makes it so convenient to keep in touch with family and I store all my pictures on it. I also do all my school&blog work from my laptop.

What is your favorite blog post you’ve written?
In a weird way, I think the memorial about my horse was probably one of my favorite posts I’ve written. I loved looking back at the pictures and remembering how much I loved her. We had a great competitive career together, and it was nice remembering all the ups and downs of competition, including trips to the hospital.
Another favorite post was my recap of my first duck hunting season with my boyfriend. It required a lot of early (and very cold) mornings, but it was so much fun. While I loved when the hunting was great, some of my favorite memories were when there were no ducks in the air and my boyfriend and I just goofed off and cast spells on each other #HarryPotterNerd #ImOkWithIt

What’s your favorite food?
My absolute hands down favorite food is pasta with butter and parmesan cheese. I grew up a really picky eater and I always had it, and now it’s my comfort food. It’s so easy to make when I’m too lazy to cook. Plus I just love it. Another favorite is Mexican food, I love Taco Tuesday (more like tacos any day) and a good burrito.

Isn't she great? You can get to know her more here:

Have a good weekend everyone!

February Beauty Finds

Hello all and Happy Monday! Today I wanted to share with you some of my recents beauty product finds.  I am nowhere even in the realm of a beauty blogger so bear with me, but I just liked these products so I wanted to share them with you!

Lush Oatifix Mask - I'm already in love with Lush but I had never tried one of their masks.  After taking forever to decide I picked this one.  It's made for sensitive, dry or irritated skin so I thought it would be perfect for mine. Oh. My. Gosh. I love it.  First of all, it smells like Banana Bread and I just want to eat it.  But once I took it off, my skin felt so smooth. I will definitely repurchase this.
Rating: 5/5

Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Shampoo - My hair stylist back home recommended this after I asked her about purple shampoos because my hair has a naturally reddish tint that I don't love.  I've never tried any other purple shampoos but I love this one! I could see the difference after one wash and even more after two.  It works really well and it totally took that tint I didn't like away.  The one thing I don't love is all the chemicals (I try to use more natural stuff), but you can't always have that.
Rating: 4/5

Essie Mini  Neons Set - This is the 2015 neons set.  It's sold out in stores but I got it on Ebay brand new.  The colors are: Make Some Noise (electric blue), Coacha'bella (magenta), Vibrant Vibes (bright yellowish/greenish lime), and All Access Pass (Purple).  I have to start out by saving that these really shouldn't be considered neon.  The lime color is but the others are not.  That being said, I like the other three colors the best.  The blue is absolutely beautiful and the pink is a really pretty bright pink.  I didn't think I'd like the purple but I actually love it on.  This post shows what they look like on.  I was a little disappointed, not because they're not pretty colors (they are!) but because I was looking for neon colors and these were not.
Rating: 3/5

Orly Nail Bonder Nail Treatment and Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Nail Coat - I mentioned these in my At Home Manicure Post last week so I won't go into all the details but they're definite game changers.
Rating: 5/5

Yes To Cucumbers Soothing Hypoallergenic Facial Towelettes - When we took our roadtrip across the country, these were a lifesaver! I carried them in my bag so that when we were in the car for hours at a time, I'd at least be able to wipe my face off and feel a little refreshed.  I recently rediscovered them and they've been such a lifesaver for those nights I'm too lazy to actually wash my face.
Rating: 4.5/5

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge - This is a dupe for the Beauty Blender.  I've never actually tried a Beauty Blender (I can't bring myself to drop that much on a sponge!) so I don't know how they compare, I have been loving this one.  I love how my makeup looks when I use it.  It gives a natural look and I can definitely tell the difference between when I use this or a brush.
Rating: 4.5/5

NYX Liquid Suede in Pink Lust - I'm totally new to Lipstick but I was really drawn to this color.  It's a bright hot pink and I love how it looks on.  It doesn't last all day and it's not waterproof like it claims to be but it's a beautiful color and it wears nicely.
Rating: 4/5

ChapStick Lip Moisturizer - I get the worst chapped lips, so I've tried a million different chapsticks.  I had never tried just the basic chapstick until I was in a pinch and my mom had an extra pack laying around.  I tried it and I really like it.  You still have to reapply, but really, what chapstick don't you have to reapply?
Rating: 4/5

So if you all try any of these, I hope you love them! And if you don't, well don't hate me ;)

Miscellannieous Friday!

Welcome back to Miscellannieous Friday! I'm kinda liking this, so it may become a weekly thing.  This week went much much better than last though, thanks to a new schedule I gave myself for last weekend. Ew, schedule on a weekend, I know right? It totally helped me manage my time better and I didn't feel totally overwhelmed going into Monday.  And that schedule may or may not have included Sunday as "Relaxing Day".

So here are my favorite posts from this week:

Helene in Between's Worst Blogging Mistakes - As always, Helene has amazing posts and always offers great advice for blogging.  I loved reading this post about some mistakes she made, it was super helpful!

Amanda's Post on #FirstWorldProblems - Hilarious post on some daily struggles.

Samantha's Post on The Cost of a Puppy - Great post on the things you actually give up when you get a puppy.  Plus, I just can't resist pictures of her adorable puppy!

This DIY Adventure Board by Annie - It's totally cute and I've been looking for a way to do something like this so it will probably be on my walls in the near future!

How MacKensie Combats The Post Travel Blues - The Post Travel Blues are the struggle! It's always hard getting back on track, but MacKensie has some great ideas on how to get back into the swing of things.

Kate's Post on Why She Travels - I love to travel and She has great reasons why she does too.

New Home Confessions by Lexi - Great post on moving in to a new place, including the struggles and the fun stuff (like a new vacuum- I can totally relate to this haha)

My favorite links this week:
We tried out this recipe for Lemon Garlic Chicken and it is SO good! And it paired perfectly with these Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Brussel Sprouts.  I can't wait to make it again!

This ad recently put out against smoking.  Interesting take on things, and I'm a sucker for anything cat-related.

Adele is the best.  That is all.

I hope you all have a good weekend and Happy Friday!

The Perfect No Chip At Home Manicure

You guys - I am H O R R I B L E at keeping up my nails when I paint them myself.  Like, I used to be happy if I could go two days without a chip. And of course I'd love to be able to go get a manicure at the salon every week, but let's be real, that is not going to happen.  Because of this I didn't paint my nails very often - why would I when they were going to chip the next day?! That was until *dromroll please* I figured out this method!
When my brother and his girlfriend were home for Christmas, she bought a ton of nail polish (They live on an island so she can't exactly go down the street for a manicure). So I tested out some of the colors she got and purchased some of her recommendations.  My manicure lasts 5-7 days with this, which is unheard of for me!

What You'll Need:

Orly Nail Bonder Nail Treatment - This basecoat is a must.  I used to think basecoats were optional but this one really helps the nail polish not chip.

Essie Nail Polish - It doesn't have to be Essie, but I love their colors and think they have really good quality polishes.  The color I used is called Make Some Noise from the Summer 2015 Neons Collection but it is sold out :(

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Nail Coat - I'm pretty sure I'm the last person to try this but it's a game changer!

Nail Polish Remover - Any brand will do.

1. Start by going over your nails with nail polish remover.  Even if you don't have any polish on, this gets rid of excess oils so the polish will stick.

2. Once nails are completely dry from remover, paint a thin coat of the Orly basecoat onto the nails.  Make sure nails are completely dry before moving on to the next step.  I like to wait at least 10 minutes.

3. Start with a thin coat of your color.  Let dry in between and continue with the necessary amount of coats.  I usually do 2-3 depending on the consistency of the polish.

4. Finish with a coat of Seche Vite Top Coat and you're good to go!

Important Tip!
It's important that all coats of polish are thin, and that you let them dry completely before starting the next coat.  This keeps the polish from being sticky in between coats and is really what makes the difference. Sometimes I wait an hour between coats or even do my base coat and first coat of color at night, then do the rest in the morning.  I know that's a little extreme and it doesn't usually work out that way, but it really helps!

This post is not sponsored by any of these products, but doesn't include affiliate links.

Easy Knitted Cat Toy Tutorial

I started making these toys for Dany and Pounce back when they were still living with my brother. I wanted to be the cool aunt so I bought them a bunch of treats and toys and last minute threw together some of these knitted mice with some leftover yarn I had from a project.
Little did I know they would love these toys more than any of the ones I bought them.  I don't know what it is about them but they're obsessed! "Protecting" this toy from his sister is the only reason I've ever heard Pounce growl (he's a big sissy).
This project is super simple and can be done real quickly.
 ________________________________________________________________________________
---
What you'll need:
  • Yarn: I didn't measure how much I used but it was around a couple yards. Something on the smaller side is better.
  • Small knitting needles: I used size 7.  They should be small so the catnip inside stays there.
  • Plastic yarn needles
  • Scissors
 ________________________________________________________________________________

1. Cast on 14 stiches.
2. Knit 10 rows.
3. On the 11th row, combine the first and second stitches.  This sounds complicated, but when you put your needle through the loop, all you have to do is put it through two loops instead of one and knit like normal.
4. Knit the rest of the row, and combine the last two stitches.
*Optional* Get your yarn all tangled up and spend 20 minutes untangling it.

5. Knit two more rows.
6. On the third row, combine the two stitches on each end of each row, as explained in Step 3.
7. Continue with the pattern of knitting 2 rows, then on the third row combining the end stitches of each side.
8. Do this until you end up with 2 stitches.
9. Cast off.
10. Cut the yarn from the ball, leaving about 2 feet (As shown in top picture).
11. Fold in half as shown in above picture (you know hotdog style?)
12. Thread your yarn needle with the 2 foot long tail that is left at the nose of the mouse.
13. Begin sewing up the long side of the mouse. Thread the needle through the body, close to the edge, making sure you get through both sides of the body.  Pull the needle through, but don't pull all the way.  I like to put the needle back through the loop and then pull all the way through, giving it a really tight stitch (shown in second picture above).
14. Continue until you get the the corner where the long side and the short side meet.
15. Take some of your leftover yarn (I used the 1 inch ball shown above) and stuff it inside the mouse, until it's about half full.  Then comes the messy part.  Add some catnip into the mouse.  It gets everywhere so make sure you do it on an easily cleaned surface.  This is hard if you have cats as they will not leave you alone while you do this.  Stuff more yarn into the mouse until it is full.
16.  Using your yarn needle, continue sewing.  I sewed up until it was fully closed, then back down to the corner to meet the loose end.  This made it easy to Tie them in a knot so it was secure.
17. Trim the two ends to be the same length.
Ta-da - You're done!

Note!
When I first started making these, I took the time to add knitted ears, a nose, and eyes.  They were very tedious additions and after the cats playing so rough with them, I was worried about the ears coming off and them eating them (I know, I'm paranoid lol) so I stopped doing that.  If you'd like to add them, they look super cute!)

As always, I hope you loved this tutorial. If you decide to make this easy toy for your cat - let me know, I'd love to see how it turns out!

Miscellannieous Friday

Well hello and happy Friday! This week was not fun, so I'm very happy to see the weekend.  Today I'm starting something new - Miscellannieous Friday! It's pretty much like all the other Friday posts out there, you know, share your favorites from the week, that kind of thing, but with my name in it. Pretty smart huh? I like to think so.

So here we go!

Some of my favorite articles from the week:

What No One Tells You About Going Home After College - To me, home is still home with my parents.  But I can definitely relate to what she's saying about living out of a suitcase, and coming home to little things different, or the whole dining room (I'm looking at you mom).

Stop Following Your Heart - Some words on some advice we've pretty much all given or received, and what you should actually follow.

What to Do If You've Lost Your Bag, Wallet, Everything - For all you travelers, super helpful article on what to do when you've lost something important.

Undercover Boss: Starkiller Base - Hilarious, even if you're not a Stars Wars fan.  Makes me dislike the casting choice for Kylo Ren just a little less (Did anyone else feel like he was a weird choice?!).

And some of my favorite blog posts I read:

Mattie's Makings Instagram Challenge! - If you haven't read this, you need to.  The possibility of free advertisement for your blog just by using a hashtag and following this amazing lady?! Sign me up!

Alexis's Reaction to The Super Bowl Halftime Show - Seriously go read this. No matter your beliefs, she has a great take on this touchy subject.

Morgan's Reception Pictures - All of her wedding pictures have been AMAZING and these are no exception.  Seriously so beautiful!

7 Photos You'll See On Instagram This Weekend - Because The Daily Tay is hilarious and so is this post.

So happy Friday everyone! I hope you have a good weekend and a Happy Valentine's Day!

5 Tips to Get Your Motivation Back (For School and Otherwise)

I was so nervous for this semester.  It's my first as an official math major and I have a couple really hard classes. I knew I needed to snap out of it because I wouldn't be able to get it done with that attitude. I've come up with a list of things I did to help me feel better about this semester and make it successful.  Many (but not all) of these tips are helpful outside of school, whatever you are struggling with motivation in.

1. Get good professors - Seriously, I cannot stress this enough.  I never thought that this was super important.  Like I always tried to get good professors but cared more about the times of the classes. This semester I was crazy nervous before class even started.  But then I went to class on the first days and my professors are seriously amazing.  They explain well, are nice and also funny (which isn't necessary but helps) and just all around good professors.  I just look at this professor of mine that is young and pretty and funny and has her doctorate, and it's motivation for me to keep going with school.

2. Keep the end goal in mind - This is true for anything, but school especially.  I just keep telling myself that I'll have my degree and it'll be awesome and it really helps to keep that in mind (especially when taking a class with topics I'll never have to use...ugh).

3. Take care of your health - This is a big one for me.  I know that when I eat good, I feel better and this translates to doing better in class.  Along the same lines, working out is so helpful.  The other day I was so stressed out after class, so I went to the gym and felt a million times better after.  Not to mention, when you have a bunch of things to do and you can actually check that off the list, it feels like a real success.

4. Give yourself some "me-time" - What ever it is you like to do, do it! I like to set aside some time for myself every so often to just relax or do something for myself.  Whether it be watching some Netflix, reading, wandering the aisles of Target (a personal favorite of mine) or anything else, taking that time to focus on something you like to do and forget about all the stressful things is so so important.

5. Buy some cute supplies - I find getting new supplies, be it a notebook, planner, pencils/pens, or anything else is really motivating! It's like - I just bought these cute new pens and planner, so maybe I should actually use them. So, when all else fails (or before then) by yourself some cute school supplies and get to work!

Like I said, these tips have already helped me get over my nerves about this semester.  It's a long road ahead and I'm still counting down the days (100!) but doing all of these things will definitely help me get through it and I hope they help you too!
